  • Winfield Not Playing Today; Sapp To Start

    22 Nov 2009 | 8:44 am
The Vikings released their list of inactive players for today’s tilt against the Seahawks and for the 4th straight game CB Antoine Winfield will not suit up. Winfield is of course dealing with a foot injury that he suffered in Week 6 against Baltimore and it appeared he had a decent chance at playing today after practicing the last 2 weeks. But, the Vikings have decided to give him 1 more weekend off and now it looks as if #26 will make his return next week for a big divisional showdown with Chicago. CB Benny Sapp will start in Winfield’s absence again and both Asher Allen and…

The Vikings and Seahawks have released their final injury reports for the week. Seahawks RB Julius Jones is the only player who has been ruled out of Sunday’s game. The guy everyone has their eye on is CB Antoine Winfield, who is working his way back from a foot injury suffered in Week 6. Winfield was listed as a limited participant all week in practice and on Friday the Vikings listed him as doubful for Sunday. “I saw a lot of progress from Wednesday to Thursday,” Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress said. “Different approach Thursday from what I saw here on Wednesday.

So, let’s break this down a bit and take a look at what can be expected on Sunday. VIKINGS RUN GAME (Advantage:  Vikings) The Vikings have the 10th ranked rushing offense in the league, despite teams still focusing on stopping Adrian Peterson.  The Seahawks are ranked 11th against the run, but part of that may have to do with their pass defense making things so…

26-year old Tarvaris Jackson doesn’t like backing up Brett Favre and he will likely pitch a fit if he’s backing him up again next year.  With that in mind the Vikings will likely attempt to trade him if Favre comes back for the 2010 season.  Jackson has played in 4 games this season for the Vikings and he has completed 4 of 7 passes (57.1%) for 82 yards with 0 TD passes and 0 INTs (98.5 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 7 times for -7 yards (-1.0 ypc) but most of them were kneel downs in victory formation.  Jackson has now played in 29 games in his four years with the…

The Minnesota Vikings (8-1) were not very sharp last week and played down to their weak opponent, the Detroit Lions.  They had a season high 13 penalties and only won by 17 against a team they could beat by 40.  I expect them to come out with a lot more energy this week against the Seattle Seahawks(3-6).  Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson should have no problem against a Hawk’s defense that gives up 338 yards per game.  The Vikings should easily eclipse that number and could blow the Seahawks out.  It would be nice if they could build a big lead and let their 40-year-old quarterback…

Vikings’ CB Antoine Winfield has a 85% chance of returning to the Vikings this weekend against the Seahawks.  He has played in 6 games this season for the Vikings and he has 30 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 4 passes defensed and 1 interception.  Winfield is strong in run support and the Vikings need him back big time.  Benny Sapp has done a decent job replacing Winfield as he has 12 tackles and he has defensed 2 passes in his 3 starts this year.  With Sapp playing decent the Vikings could decide to error on the side of caution with Winfield as they need him healthy to help the D…

The Detroit Lions lost 27-13 early this season against the Vikings at home and it will be even tougher to compete with them in the MetroDome on Sunday.  Matt Stafford needs to get on the same page as Calvin Johnson or the Lions are going to have a hard time moving the ball against the Vikings.  Brandon Pettitgrew could have a big game for the Lions on Sunday and so could Calvin Johnson but it will have to be on the short stuff as DE Jared Allen (10.5 sacks) will likely also be in the Lions’ backfield often.  Lions’ QBs have been sacked 26 times already this season and the Vikings have…

Like one of his stop-and-go, juke-and-twirl, stiff-arming runs, Peterson's life has been full of taxing push-and-pull. He rattles off nuggets of the three numbing events of his life -- holding his eight-year-old dying brother in his arms at age seven, coping for eight years beginning at age 12 while his father was in prison, and enduring the murder of his half-brother before the 2007 NFL combine -- with vigor. Filed under: Vikings, NFC North, NFL AnalysisI'll admit, I was wrong. During the offseason, I wrote here at FanHouse that the Vikings' pursuit of Brett Favre was foolhardy. Between his age and the poor finish to his 2008 season in New York, it seemed too risky to put the Vikings' season in the hands of a 40-year-old quarterback. Brad Childress' gamble has paid off big-time. Favre is one of the key reasons that Minnesota is battling New Orleans for home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs, and he is the reason Childress is talking contract extension instead of worrying about his job security.

To this point, it seems like the Vikings have yet to put together a complete game in which all 4 quarters were played as well as possible. After watching the Vikings defeat the Lions 27-10 on Sunday, I had some new insights about this team. There were flashes of greatness, flashes of fumble-itis, and flashes of “Thank God for the Silver Fox.” All in all, the day ended with the Vikings ahead of the Bears by 4 games and the Packers, through tiebreaker, by 4 as well. Those losses extend the Vikings lead over the Bears to 3.5 and the Packers to, with head to head considered, 4 games. 3 Nov 2009 | 6:42 pm
The Minnesota Vikings go to 7-1 after beating the Green Bay Packers for the second time this season.  The big story for most was of course Brett Favre going back to Lambeau playing against his former team.  However, the victory was more important for the Vikings as a team and their positioning in the NFC North.  [...]

It is going to be a tough battle for the Minnesota Vikings this week at Pittsburgh.  Even though the Vikings are 6-0 and the Steelers are 4-2 many are picking the Steelers to come out on top.  There is no doubt that the Vikings have been playing good football as of late but there are [...]

The MN Vikings beat the Detroit Lions 27-10 in an impressive game that had fans saying, this could be the season. From the start of the first quarter the Minnesota Vikings roster controlled the field. • NFL Week 10 Preview: Vikings-Lions Game

    12 Nov 2009 | 2:59 pm
This week the Minnestota Vikings, fresh off of their by week, take on the Detroit Lions at the Metrodome. With a 1-7 record the Detroit Lions don't pose much of a threat to the Minnesota Vikings... With that said, any team can have a great game and if the Minnesota Vikings and Brett Favre underestimate the Lions the results could be ugly. This should be a great game for Vikings fans and there are still great Vikings-Lions Tickets left. Why not catch this game live? Who knows maybe some of the excitement from the first Lions-Vikings match-up will happen again!Below is a video-clip of…

  • Wilf: No need to wait for Childress extension

    Rick Alonzo
    22 Nov 2009 | 9:38 am
Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said before today's game that ne never considered waiting until after the season to determine whether to give coach Brad Childress a contract extension. Childress was rewarded Thursday with a new five-year contract. "We've had a great relationship working together," Wilf said. "We feel very comfortable with Brad. There was never that type of thought." Regarding stadium developments, Wilf continued to emphasize the importance of trying to resolve the issue as soon as possible. He dismissed the resolution approved last week by the Metropolitan Sports Facilities…

Vikings Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield will not play today against Seattle. Apparently he's still not where he would like to be after dealing with a fractured right foot for the past month. Benny Sapp will start in his place at left corner. The other Vikings' inactives today are Sage Rosenfels (third quarterback), receiver Jaymar Johnson, running back Albert Young, linebacker Erin Henderson, center Jon Cooper, defensive tackle Fred Evans and defensive end Jayme Mitchell. Reserve defensive end Jayme Mitchell wasn't on the field during the early portion of practice today that's open to the media. Mitchell wasn't listed on the injury report Wednesday or Thursday. All of the other players were on the field. The final injury report of the week will be released later today.

  • Who Are the Braves Interested In? Mostly Ex-Braves.

    Alex Remington
    22 Nov 2009 | 9:05 am
by chetthejet We give Dayton Moore a lot of crap for his absolute obsession with acquiring ex-Braves, but he clearly learned it from John Schuerholz — just as Frank Wren has. David O’Brien’s latest story announces that the Braves are interested in reacquiring Mark DeRosa and Jermaine Dye, as well as Georgia boy Mike Cameron, who has inexplicably never yet played for the Braves, and Alabaman Josh Willingham. They’re still trying to decide whether to offer arbitration to once and future Brave Adam LaRoche. There’s something to be said for the value of knowing a…

In a game that figures to be decided primarily by the play of it’s two quarterbacks, I like Jason Campbell in this match-up…but only if the Redskins OL can give him adequate protection. For the first time this year, the Redskins defense will not be at full strength. Albert Haynesworth will miss the game with an ankle injury, while Carlos Rogers will not start at corner (coaches decision). Chris Horton went out for the year prior to last weeks game. With the defense a bit banged up, the offense needs to pick up some of the slack. With Ladell Betts running the football, they…

  • Any Given Sunday, Week 11 NFL Preview

    22 Nov 2009 | 6:05 am
Sunday 1 PM EST Indianapolis Colts @ Baltimore Ravens These are two very evenly matched teams and this game should be a treat for anyone that gets to watch it live. Both clubs are ranked in the top 5 in Total DVOA, so don't expect a blowout like last year's 31-3 Indianapolis win. The Colts most glaring weakness this season has been their run defense. They will have their hands full trying to stop Baltimore's Ray Rice, who is averaging 5.2 YPC. The Ravens have attempted to address their problems in the kicking game by releasing the struggling Steven Hauschka this week and bringing in veteran…
